It is no secret that Hayden loves reading. He constantly has a book in his hands and I have a hard time keeping fresh books on hand available for him to read. The books we do have have become a jumbled mess on a small book case in his room. In an effort to try to organize his room and make it more “reading friendly,” I had the idea to create a kid’s reading nook in his room.
DIY Kid’s Reading Nook
Hayden’s room is lacking for a lot of usable space with his bunk bed, desk, dresser and massive collection of toys, creating a reading nook for the small space proved to be slightly challenging. Since we are still in the process of figuring out the bigger house situation, the small space reading nook would have to do for the time being. If anything, to keep his books more organized.
Create Space for reading nook
Hayden’s bunk bed and small shelf that currently held his books took up the majority of one side of his room. So I decided to move his bunk bed all the way down to create a small area that could become the reading space. Since the shelf would no longer work in that area I turned to Pinterest for ideas on how to easily store books on the wall.
I came across multiple sites that suggested using Ikea’s spice racks to store books. And at only $4.99 a rack, it was an easy decision. These racks can be found at Ikea.com.
I actually ended up purchasing about 8 of these and only used 3. They were easy to put together and hang on the walls. Instead of finding studs in the wall, I used anchors in order to hang these. The spice racks don’t come with hardware to actually put them up but we had screws on hand.
Each shelf holds about 6-7 books depending on their size. This is a great way to keep the books on display but organized as well.
Make it comfortable
After I hung the racks, added a small table, a basket to hold the overflow books, and a rug. I needed a couple other finishing touches. On one recent trip to TJ Maxx, I found a back rest pillow, similar to one from Amazon.com below, that Hayden is obsessed with and would go perfect in the corner of his new reading nook. I also added another round pillow that he can use to lounge and read with as well.
Add a rug and a reading light to give it the finishing touch.
