I’s been a rough winter. Colds, flu, stomach bugs and now that COVID-19 has made it’s appearance in our community keeping ourselves and our kids healthy is priority number one. Many community schools have closed as well as restaurants and stores in an attempt to promote social distancing and limit the spread. Even with this, our kids and individuals in our community are still getting sick. So I have compiled a list of healthy habits for kids to adopt to keep them healthy all year long!
Healthy Habits for Kids
Hand Washing
This tops my healthy habits for kids list because it is the one thing that you can do all year round to keep your children healthy. Encourage good hand hygiene every day and not just because the CDC told you to.
Get outside
Get out and get some fresh air. Being stuck inside the house all day, everyday as a child is absolute torture. Let them outside and play. Take family walks. Avoid places that will be crowded such as local beaches and parks. Try to get out and doing something outside at least once a day.
Fruits & Veggies
I type this as my child is on his third snack of fruit snacks this morning. The amount of snacks my child has eaten lately is a little ridiculous. Eating more fruits and veggies is only going to help your child in staying healthy.
Drink up
No I am not talking about the parents, even though many days we feel like it especially being stuck at home. Make sure that kids are getting plenty of water to drink throughout the day. I know I am constantly reminding my son to drink his water throughout the day. Especially after going outside and burning energy. Keep them hydrated to keep them healthy!
Sleep
I know this time feels like a never ending vacation for kids but it is super important that they still get enough sleep. Not only will it allow them to be more focused the next day but when my son doesn’t get enough sleep he tends to be a bear. And no one wants to be around a bear when they are stuck inside.
Multivitamins/Probiotics
Multivitamins and probiotics is a great healthy habit for your children to have. probiotics are a great way to help with digestion and immune system function and are particularly helpful in kids who have gastrointestinal problems such as constipation. My favorite product to give Hayden is the combo gummy that can be found HERE. There are so many other options available for kids so find what works well with your child.
Routine
Try and stick to a routine as much as you can. Wondering how to keep a routine for homeschooling during the school shut down? Check out my latest post on How to Homeschool as a Working Mom
Stay Home
The most important healthy habits for kids right now is to stay home. Leave them at home with another parent while you go to the grocery store, or to the store to get other essential items. Ditch the play dates and only have them around other adults or kids if you absolutely need to. Stay home as much as possible to limit the spread of this virus.
Hopefully everyone is staying healthy right now. Anymore healthy habits for kids that you suggest? Let me know in the comments!
We are definitely getting our kids outside more. We have been taking late afternoon walks around the neighborhood.
Definitely agree with all of this! The area I could probably use improvement on is routine. While we have great dinner to bedtime routine the rest of the day can be pretty sporadic!
Amazing post definitely want my nephews to have habits like these
I look forward to having kids! I hope to have them outside as much as possible.
These are some great tips but especially right now during all of the craziness going on.
These are all very helpful tips. Can’t wait for covid to be behind us so we can move on with our lives
Getting outside has been super important for us these last couple of weeks. Some of these routines we definitely need to work on. My toddlers will eat plenty of fruit, but I have a hard time getting them to consume any protein! Constantly worried about their picky eating.
These are great tips. Thanks for posting!
Great post, we should encourage childrens to adopt these healthy habits from the very start.Well, great list.
these are such good tips! and of course staying home right now is the most important! sending my love and hope you are doing okay!
These are some great tips for kids. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome tips! I have to agree with all of these tips as a preschool teacher. I am so sad that schools are cutting back on outdoor play as it is very vital for our bodies.
All of these are so important!! Thanks for sharing!
Eating vegetables and always washing hands are the main habits for healthy kids awesome tips! Stay safe 🙂
These are really good habits. The earlier they learn the better it is.
These are great habits to start with the kids, even at a young age. Routine is so important so I think it’s crucial to start early and these routines quickly become habits we don’t have to keep reiterating. The sleep one has kinda gone out the window right now with everybody home and our schedules turned upside down but I can definitely see it’s had a negative effect and we need to get back to our norm.
These are very important. Routine is an especially good idea; kids need structure in their lives and it helps the parents stay sane too!
What a very timely post on what is going on right now. Teaching kids the healthy habits is the best defense to combat this unseen enemy we are fighting right now!
Excellent tips! Thank you for sharing! We are all going a bit stir crazy these days!

This is so helpful! I feel like we are just finally getting into a stay at home routine here, March was a mess for us! I’ll definitely be working some more habits into our days, this post is great! Thanks!
I believe that get out and get some fresh air is everything!
Things every parent can do that really, don’t cost a thing! Love this read, thanks for making self-isolation seem less insane and more practical.
I love this post. Kids grow up to quick. I believe they enjoy getting involved in doing practical things.
It’s been so long that we haven’t moved out at all. Following many other steps but the society doesn’t allow kids to move out hence my little one is completely house arrested but she doesn’t complain. For some sunshine she sits in the balcony and soaks up the sun
My little one gets sick very often. I’m going to incorporate more of these tips in my home. Great read!
Rightly said. With the current stress it has become important to increase the immunity of our child,
Getting enough water is VERY important! I’m very lucky that my kids enjoy drinking water (though I slack at it from time to time). Thanks for sharing these great suggestions for keeping your kids healthy!
Many people are under the impression that kids only get sick during flu season. That is so not true! Healthy habits are things that need to be practiced ALL the time.
Definitely important to spend time outside around the house of course. That’s what My kids have been loving to do. Great post 👍🏻
I don’t think people realize how important it is to go outside, not only for a healthy immune system, but a healthy mind. We go outside every single day. These are great healthy habits for kids, thanks for sharing!
These are great tips! I give my kids probiotics and vitamins everyday, even my 6 month old gets probiotics.
We’ve been trying to eat more fruits and veggies and be better about taking our vitamins here. Every little bit helps!
You have a great and excellent points here. We should allow our kids to play outside and socialize with other. and taking vitamins and eat fruits & veggies are good to them.
