When you have children, your first instinct is to protect them. You want to keep them safe from all the dangers that the world may bring to them. For me I would research safe sleep practices, harmful chemical laden baby products and ways to keep kids healthy. So I baby-proofed anything that could possibly be baby-proofed, limited my child’s exposure to harmful chemicals and made the pledge to keep my home smoke-free.

Maine has always been such an amazing place to live. The outdoor activities are endless and the scenery is breathtaking. Another great thing about Maine is that it genuinely cares about its residents. Even though Maine has strong smoking laws, about 79,000 children in Maine are exposed to secondhand smoke in the home.
As a nurse, I have seen not only what smoking does to the smoker’s body but I also have seen the effects that secondhand smoke has on their families as well, including children. There are nearly 7,000 chemicals in secondhand smoke alone which children cannot protect themselves from being exposed to. In fact, children who are exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to have asthma, get sick more often and have more incidence of tooth decay.
That is why I am challenging all of my friends, family and YOU to join me in taking Maine’s Smoke Free Home Pledge.
By heading to Breathe Easy Maine you can take the pledge as well to keep your home healthy and sign up to get a free pledge kit that includes a smoke-free home certificate, window decals, coloring pages and more!
Now I am not saying that you need to quit smoking, I know how incredibly hard that can be. I am asking for you to just pledge to take it outside and protect your children from secondhand smoke exposure! Keep your home healthy for both your children and pets (who also can experience adverse health effects from secondhand smoke).

Smoke free is 100000% the way to be!!! I really hope my son learns this as he gets older 🙂
I have never liked a home where people smoke, worst is if they have kids.I`d not like my bad habits to affect kids. What I do not like about smoking in the home is the lingering smell, you can just not get it out.
I super love the idea of taking a smoke-free pledge, great idea. A home should always be the healthiest environment for kids. Great post.
Smoke free for 4 years now! Great challenge!
What an important topic! Thanks for sharing this tip on how to keep kids healthy!
Great topic, I really hate the fact that second hand smoke is more dangerous than smoking yourself.. I hope more and more people would be more sensitive about this.
My has been smoke free for over 20 years now! I don’t smoke, but my husband does. He has to take it outside! One of my boys was born with a lot of health problems, and don’t want to make them worse!
oh wow! This is really great and of COURSE an amazing idea and something we should all do!
This is so awesome. This sounds like an excellent pledge to take.

Really interesting and extremely informative post on healthy tips for kids.
That’s a great idea! Is people smoking in other people’s house a big problem in the US?
In Europe you tend to go outside to smoke UNLESS the owner of the house smokes inside as well.
I totally agree smoke free is important for family and glad you have a smoke free pledge. I don’t hope to have my guests smoking in my house too.
this is so interesting, I try to avoid passing where people are smoking – specially if I’m with the baby
Smoke free environment is very important for any person but for kids it is top priority. I live in apartment building, we struggle with smoking people from one of the apartments. nothing helps(
Our whole family is of non smokers. I hate people who smoke in public places. They make a lot of people struggle who are around at that time. This is a great cause you have started.
That is an awesome movement towards a healthier and happy lifestyle. It’s always nice to teach them at a young age. They will surely grow good citizens.
One of my proudest moments in life was when I quit smoking the moment I learned I was pregnant with my son. Like you, I want to protect him from anything that could be harmful to him and his health. 🙂
I actually am the biggest enemy of smoking – especially in the house so I never allow it!
This is such a nice slogan to any homes especially with kids. Second hand smoker is really the one that affecting in this condition.
I’ve never smoked my whole life… never have, never will.
I love that you are doing something to make a change and protect children from what they don’t know or realize is hurting them. I hope you have great success!!
This is a great idea and a lot more people should do this!
It’s a very good initiative.. providing a smoke free environment for our kids and Awareness of its dangers
I am really concerned with my kids. I love them seeing playing outdoor and but I know the fact that sometimes it is not safe due to the interaction of diff people especially smoker. Thank you for raising this pledge.
This is such a great challenge. Joining in such a wonderful campaign could help save our babies.
What a wonderful way of raising a pledge to help save our kids. This should be shared with others.
Great healthy tips for kids and so important to keep the house smoke free.
These healthy tips for kids are great, really insightful. Thank you for raising awareness on this!
Smoking poses dangers not only to our body but also to our family’s health. I am glad you have taken this pledge 🙂
This is a great initiative to stop smoking habit and spread out the awareness through families and kits to kids.
It’ so interesting and useful. Thanks for sharing amazing content.
Totally agree with you!
I am indifferent because my mom smoke, and I mean it’s a decision, but she never smoked when I was younger, she was aware that it is bad for kids and she didn’t do it.
I’m happy to share that Noone in the family smokes. 🙂 Thank God. 🙂
This is great. My college became a tobacco free campus a few years back and I am so happy they made that decision.
Adorable! We should maintain a healthy environment for kids.
Omg everyone should take the smoke free challenge! I’m not sure why anyone would still smoke in 2019!
I agree with what you said. But I have tried a lot to convince my dad but he never listens to any tips for the elders?
I’m so glad nobody smoke in my family.:)
That’s awesome that you’re teaching your kids how to smoke-free. I never smoked in my life but I’ve seen people everywhere who smokes. We need fresher air!
Very important not to expose children and others to secondhand smoke, a lot of people should take this pledge
Second hand smoke is more harmful than the one an active smoker inhales, so protecting the kids should always come first.
It’s sad that I’m the only non-smoker in my house so getting them to smoke outside is impossible as they play the ‘majority vote’ card. However, if we have children here, smoking is taken into the kitchen or garden.
Of course! It is a no-brainer. Passive smoking is very dangerous.
I live in a smoke free home and NY was one of the early adopters of smoke free zones. With all the toxins in the world today,we all need to create safe spaces.
We just can’t be OK with ppl smoking around little kids
This is SO important for having healthy kids! The house has to be healthy for them to also be. 😉 Great write-up. Thanks.
